Overhand Short Toss
By Charles "Popcorn" Thompson
This is one of my favorite baseball drills because the hitter gets lots of good pitches to hit in a short amount of time.
In this drill, stand approximately 30' away from the hitter behind an L-Screen for your protection. The hitter should always wear a helmet for protection. From this distance coaches should have relatively good control. Throw pitches to all four (4) quadrants of the strike zone - up & in, up & away, down & in, and down & away. Tell the hitter which quadrant you intend to throw into.
Emphasize fundamental hitting - hitting the ball where it is pitched. And for the older hitters, mix in some curve balls and change-ups.
This drill can be done inside or outside depending on the weather.
