THE INSIDE PITCH DRILL
By Charles "Popcorn" Thompson
This drill emphasizes the proper use of the hips and hands at contact for an inside pitch. Many young hitters will try to hit the inside pitch without rotating the hips. This will usually result in a weak hit off the handle of the bat or a foul ball to the opposite field from swinging late. The hips and hands should work together in the swing. This drill forces the batter to fully rotate the hips and use his hands properly to attack the ball out front. It takes quick hips and hands to hit a good fastball thrown on the inside of the plate. The tosser should emphasize "quickness" as he is tossing to the hitter.
The Setup
The batter should stand at the plate as if he is facing a pitcher on the mound. The tosser should stand directly in front of the batter as the pitcher. The tosser can vary the distance if working on fastballs or offspeed pitches. The tosser should toss the ball directly at the batter's front hip, forcing the batter to quickly rotate the hips. The batter should hit the ball directly in front of his body. If this drill is done correctly, the tosser will be in no danger of getting hit by the ball. The hitter will pull the ball to his back side.
